The Summary

Assignment Overview:

You will take many classes that will ask you to summarize and respond to the materials you engage with; therefore, for this assignment you will begin to practice these skillsFirst, you will choose one of the texts we will be discussing in class – “The Clan of One-Breasted Women,” “Drug War Nightmare,” or “Home Should Not be a War Zone” and summarize it for me and your classmates.

Purpose:

Your purpose here will be to accurately and objectively represent the ideas of your chosen text so that others can understand the source or evaluate your comprehension of it. Do not include ANY ideas that are not in the original. Remember that you are not responsible for the quality of the ideas you are summarizing; you are responsible for representing them fairly and without opinion.

Audience:

Your audience for this assignment is your classmates and me. Although most of us will be familiar with the text you’ve chosen, you should thoroughly represent its main ideas and key points, and provide accurate textual evidence throughout – as if we arenot familiar with it.

Requirements:

As we will discuss in class, a summary is a concise paraphrase of all the main ideas in a text. Most summaries present the major points in the order that the author made them and continually refer back to the piece being summarized (i.e. "Alexander argues that ..." or "Tempest Williams also points out that ... "). Please note that a summary should be about one-third of the length of theoriginal text being summarized. This means that your summary will be about 1-2 pages, typed and in MLA format. Use the most concise and precise language you can, and do not repeat an idea, even if the original text does so.

Remember that you must be objective. You absolutely must keep your opinions out of the summary, even in such subtle ways as writing, “McChrystal’s best point is…” or “McChrystal is trying to prove…” The latter, for example, implies that McChrystal is not successful at whatever he is trying to prove.
