Often the job of a police officer is viewed as masculine-type work. However, the majority of the time spent on the job does not require brute strength or contain dangerous situations. Sexists argue that women are not suitable to be police officers or correctional officers because they don't have the required skill or strength to do the same job as a male. This is quite the opposite as stated by the book. After Title VII, studies had shown that women were as capable as men to serve on the police force while doing a good job.
The positives include: being able to communicate with rape victims and be able to be taken seriously, be able to calm a woman down easier than a male could, and perform strip searches on females due to it being illegal for men to do so.
Negatives include: Not have the same physical ability as a male in some circumstances and certain neighborhoods may take female officers less seriously than males.
We are seing a decrease of disparity between female and male officers throughout the century. In one study, just because there are openings for additional police officers doesn't mean more and more females are being hired. Natarajan proposed four reasons why the integration of women in the police force is still not where it should be. These four reasons are prejudice by male officers who view women as unable to perform the job, societal attitudes that women are unable to perform, inherent physical differences to men, and lack of women who find policing compatible with raising a family.

Women make just as good as police officers as men do. Women police officers tend to be discriminated against more then men but this just means women have to work harder to be treated equal.
Advantages of women officers are having a better relationships with citizens, women can de-escalate potentially violent situations, empathy for rape victims and battered women, and a broader and more creative outlook on policing.
Disadvantages of women police officers is the discrimination they face with the criminals and their coworkers. Women police officers can be treated more negatively then men officers by coworkers, administration, supervisors, victims, and offenders.
I think we see so much disparity in the number of female officers based on women finding policing compatible with parenting. I think that the other three reasons the book gives are good reasons also. Women face a lot of prejudice and stigma by society and I think this can turn women away from policing.
