literary merit, that wouldn't be categorized as what your text refers to as "genre fiction," which the text's author defines as, "writing in narrow, plot-driven conventions such as western, romance, detective story, and so forth."

It would be preferable that stories not contain any of the following: talking plants or animals; zombies, vampires, werewolves, or the like; unicorns, fairies, or any other mythical creature that never really existed; and so on. If you want to include any of these in your story, be sure to do so in a wNo Vampires!ay that doesn't leave the story lacking in literary merit.

Before posting your story, ensure that it is in the proper fiction format (see pp. 294-296 in your text, but don't include a cover page), and that the pages are numbered.

In addition to posting your own short story, you must post comments about at least half of the stories submitted by other students. If fewer than ten stories are posted, you are required to comment on at least five of them. Your comments must be primarily focused on the craft aspects of the story--character development, plot, setting, language, etc.--and should be fairly extensive. It's not really possible to make a meaningful comment on a story in one or two sentences. Your comments also need to make it clear that you read the story--the whole story--and that you have given it some thought. One of your comments will almost certainly be about the ending of the story and how it relates to the rest of the story. Finally, you will receive no credit if you just repeat what someone before you has already said. I read the comments in chronological order, so I know when someone is just parroting another comment. Before making any comments on others' stories, please review the Workshop Participation Guidelines located in the resource bin.
