Directions: Answer the question in your own words. You may use quotes from the texts to support your answers; however, the bulk of your answer should be your own elucidation of the material. Additionally, do not quote directly from your notes. I know what I said about the material. I want to read what you have to say about the material.  Your answer should be approximately 2-3 pgs.

Format: Your paper should be typed in 12-point font, Times New Roman, and double-spaced. Begin your paper with your name, the class title, and its day and time in the upper-left hand corner.

Prompt:

Both Sade and Kant are responding to the cultural transformations that began during the Scientific Revolution and culminated in the ideals of the period of the Enlightenment.  Specifically, reason is held as the one, true authority capable of ascertaining the truths of the world and human nature – in contradistinction to both monarchy and religion previously. To what unique moral position has reason lead each philosopher? That is, briefly state each philosopher’s moral position and the reasons he provides in support of that position. In your estimation, who has the more “rational” moral philosophy, Sade or Kant?
