SEDIMENTARY Organic Matter solution

a)

(i) The spatial changes in sedimentary organic matter within ancient continental margin sediments is due to different types of organic matter such as Kerogen at different location. Kerogen is a mixture of different organic chemical compounds which are insoluble in most of the organic solvents because of high molecular weight. Different types of Kerogen include Sapropelic, Planktonic, Sulfurous, Humic and Residue. As, each type of Kerogen is composed of material which possess different chemical and physical characteristics so there is a spatial variation. For example, Type one kerogen ( Sapropelic ), containing alginate, amorphous organic matter, cyanobacteria, freshwater algae, and land plant resins.  While, type two planktonic contain Plankton, hydrogen and oxygen.
