Missouri Redress Petitions (Pearson e-Reader)

What could explain the vicious behavior of the people in Missouri towards the Mormon (LDS) settlers?  What (if anything) did the Mormons do that caused such hatred amongst the Missourians, or was there perhaps another reason why they were so violent towards the Mormons, who had legally bought land and hoped to settle peacefully?  If there was another reason, what was it?
