  • 1.       Search Online for some eye-catching, interesting, and compelling images. Perhaps you can use websites such as: Fotosearch (http://fotosearch.com), the Commons on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/commons/), the Associated Press’s AccuNet/AP (http://ap.accuweather.com), Google Images, or Library of Congress (www.loc.gov).
  • 2.       Choose 6 images that typify diverse sorts of content, such as a news photo presenting an action shot of protest marches, a magazine photo of last season’s sportswear, an historical textbook photo of elected leaders shaking hands, a family snapshot of Dad doing the dishes, etc. You may even want to use ONE photo/image that is found in your own personal electronic collection. (These are JUST SUGGESTIONS of the types of images you might find/choose.)
  • 3.       Examine and discuss the stories implied in these pictures: What has been selected and emphasized in them? What has been omitted? How do the depicted participants appear to relate to one another? What is likely and/or unlikely about each picture? What is familiar and/or unfamiliar?
  • 4.       Examine and discuss what purpose each image serves:

·         To document what happened?
·         To aid in instruction or installation?
·         To inform, advise, or warn?
·         To entertain?
·         To preserve personal or communal memories?
  • 5.       Further examine and discuss what has been selected and emphasized in these images. And what has been omitted, what appears focused or unfocused, what appears centered or un-centered. What familiar icons or representations seem implied in each image? Has the photographer or creator of the image manipulated the “scene,” the content of the image, in order to achieve a particular purpose?
  • 6.       What is your reaction to each image? Positive? Negative? Amused? Confused? Etc.
