Case Example Clean Air Act (CAA): Berg et al. (2011), Chapter 8 describes the U.S. Clean Air Act (CAA) and some of its success and failures. Industry often criticizes required environmental air quality regulations under CAA as too expensive and a hurdle to economic progress. In early 2011 under a court order and pressure from Congress, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was mandated to make air pollution compliance less expensive for industry.

- In the specific example you chose, do the advantages of environmental regulations (e.g., reduction in air pollution, water pollution, limitation on harvest of natural resources, etc.) outweigh any competitive gain?
