Writing Project #1: Scholarship Essay

Our first writing project is going to be writing an essay applying for a scholarship. Most college students can use extra free money, but very few take advantage of scholarships. You do not have to have a perfect GPA to apply for scholarships. There are scholarships out there for every student.

NOTE: Writing a scholarship essay uses many of the same techniques as writing a cover letter to apply for a job or a personal statement to gain entrance into a University. Many of you will be writing one of these types in the future, and hopefully, many of you will use this scholarship essay to apply for scholarships in the fall.

Your audience for this essay will be the scholarship committee (that is the group of individuals who read scholarships to determine which students receive them). Your purpose is to try and convince the scholarship committee to award you the scholarship. Although, this is an essay; this type of essay is not as long as traditional academic essays, and it is a personal rather than research based.

We are going to use the actual guidelines from the college scholarship foundation. The Scholarship Booklet  Financial Aid Department suggests your essay should address the following points:

  • Tell us about your personal life story and experience
  • Explain the extent of your financial need, if applicable
  • Tell us why you’ve chosen your particular career or field of study
  • Explain your long-term career goals and how a Community College education will help you achieve your goals

As you begin working on brainstorming ideas for your essay, consider your purpose and audience. Also, consider what you want your focus to be. Use your writing skills and “voice” to produce an essay that follows the directions and enlightens your reader to your abilities and potential.  Remember that you are “selling” yourself, so present yourself in the best possibly manner.
