Rough draft
Essay V is a thorough revision of Essay IV, the Argument essay that you wrote using ONLY the sources I provided. Your essay drew upon common knowledge or personal examples, but not extended narratives. Now you will add more research material as well as revise your writing. We discussed the guidelines for this revision in class, but, just as a reminder:
· This essay counts as 20% of your course grade (see syllabus), so rework sentences, create smooth transitions and connections, add more specific examples to support your points, and incorporate sources logically. Avoid a ‘O’ for an unacceptable essay: do not just correct the mistakes I marked or commented upon in Essay IV (see the comments at the top of the first page for a general guideline, then look at the highlights or markings on the pages for further direction). Correcting these is a good starting point, and you must do this, but this alone is not worthy of an entire, new essay grade.
· I will not help you correct it, or the revision will be mine and not yours. No other outside help is allowed either, except for the Write to Excellence Center. You are allowed a one-time extra 5 points credit if you work with a tutor there and have the tutor stamp and sign your rough draft. This will not be credited to late papers, though. You may visit the writing center as often as you wish, but not in place of class attendance (and the 5 points, again, is only granted once).
· Also, you must incorporate at least one SCHOLARLY journal (must come from library journals database!) besides the source you already used in Essay IV in your paper, using one quote and at least one paraphrase (you may use more paraphrases, but not more quotes). Be sure to paraphrase thoroughly and to cite sources within the essay as well as on the Works Cited page, which must be included as part of the document and submitted on Moodle.
· You must also include a thoroughly marked-up rough draft (in this case, your typed copy of Essay IV – not the copy I already graded, but your own saved copy). Failure to follow instructions may result in a 0, with no opportunity for revision. At this point in the semester, not following instructions, particularly for things that have been part of the instructions all semester long, is inexcusable. Please read over these instructions carefully before submitting essay and all required materials.
While the minimum word count is still 750 (and that will produce a very thin essay content-wise), at this point you should be working closer toward the expectations of English 102 courses and others that require research and writing.
Remember to submit all required materials, in the correct order, in your matrix folder: rubric; your final, typed draft (which includes Works Cited as part of the document); rough drafts (showing much correction/revision), printouts of sources (with areas you used highlighted), and the graded Essay IV at the very bottom. Staple materials, but do not staple Essay IV to the same stack. If sources are thick, they may require separate stapling. Use your judgment.
Do not forget to submit the exact same final draft (including Works Cited) to Moodle. Essays I, II, IV, and V must all be on Moodle, in addition to being submitted as hard copies. (Essay III was written in class, of course.)
Late work is not accepted after the last week of classes, if at all. Please see your syllabus and see me if you have questions regarding policy.
