The Origins of the Tulsa Riot and Its Damages

Looking at the modern scholarly interests in accordance to the race and law, Brophy tells the source of the riot was from a conflict in racial interpretation. A lot of African- American people are located north of Tulsa and Oklahoma and they are divided by a railway tracks. World war one forced this people to equate the law. Those who were coming back from the war believed that the country had engaged in the battle in order to protect and campaign for the democracy in the whole world. However, protecting the democracy during the period of world war one proofed that African- American newspapers gave a report that only meant to spoil and exploit the black people in terms of wealth and labor.

The people who lived in Greenwood wanted to come up with a new reconstruction when they returned back as a result of the aspirations ascribed to the country’s trials in the war. Greenwood was an economically stable part of the Tulsa having some few social amenity institutions.

The inequality that was harassing the African- American Oklahomans did not come to an end. It farther drove down to a point where the police did very negligible job to protect African- American people who were being threatened from time to time by the white people. As a result of the police’s ignorance, the threats became huge and real. The white violence directly penetrated against African- American. The whites made advantage of the violence and the drove off the African- American citizens from the center where they used to live.

Inequality was farther spread through huge penalties that were incurred on the African- American people. In any chance an Africa- America person would touch a white person; enormous penalties were incurred to them. Sometimes, African- American people were faultily told to have even raped the white man’s women. This made the African- American citizens view as if they were being separated from the whites.

Chapter 4

In a country that finds virtues of democracy, one would not think that the judiciary would go against its policies. This is proofed when a criminal defendant pleads guilty to a felony; no fundamental rights are considered. Alexander addresses more about how the drug offenders are treated in a heavy way as if they were not part of the society. As the old age goes, human is to error, I believe that this is very true. The drug felon is denied a right to vote or serve in a jury. Jeremy Travis believes that no punishment for an offense is enough to pay for the damage it caused thus the criminals will always pay for the wrongs done. Despite this social standard, a second chance and respect is helpful if they proved that they were actually sorry.

They are seen as outcasts and live in shame, exclusion and some even die due to the disgrace and depression they have gone through. Alexander continues to talk about how the people who plea guilty for the first time also get an equal dose of discrimination with those who are incarcerated for life. According to the United States Supreme Court, public housing tenants can be thrown out as long as they have participated in the asserted criminal act. Alexander continues to tell us how the law evicts drug felons, together with the people they live with. He empathizes with the vulnerable families that are rendered homeless. As much as it seems unjust, the families need to understand that they are better of evacuating rather than living in a neighborhood that will subject them to discrimination and ridicule for the rest of their stay. This is so since the society generalizes the whole issue and does not give a second chance.

Nevertheless, these families would have avoided this if they knew it would have brought problems to them, especially because they are depending on the public housing. On the contrary, the black ex-offenders endure huge impact on this judgmental life they have to leave. Therefore, the black people find it harder to explore into the job market. Consequently, the crime rates and poverty rises as the structural barriers of employment to black ex-offenders increases. Discrimination against race according to my opinion is no way to handle matters despite the crime. Black or white have no difference if they all committed a criminal offence.
