Prompt for Essay 3 (4-5 pages)

 This unit is called “Entering the Conversation,” and accordingly I am going to ask you to do some very basic research for it. The main prompt is as follows:

1. Choose a short (under 20 pg) persuasive essay or article from a legitimate source. It should have an argument, otherwise you won’t be able to complete the assignment. You are welcome to use anything in the Reading the World book, with the exception of something you have already written about. You may also select an essay from another source. If you choose to pick an essay not in the reader, you will need my approval.

2. Find at least one additional essay (also from a reputable source) that is in some way in conversation with the first essay. This conversation can be a direct reply, or it can be considered a conversation because both address the same issues.

3. Write an essay in which you lay out the two arguments: explain their respective positions, as well as the ways in which they relate to each other. Then, in the second half of your essay, position your own views in context of the two arguments you have examined so far. A rough structure guideline would be

* Intro (0.5-1pg)

* Explaining arguments and their relations (1.5pg)

* Positioning your own view in the context of B (1.5pg)

* Conclusion (0.5pg)

Legitimate/Reputable sources can be defined as those that are held to strict professional standards. This includes, but is not limited to, major newspapers and magazines, scholarly books or articles, government publications, scientific studies, curated encyclopedias, and reference books. You should always be able to find the author or authors of legitimate sources, as well as publication data. Web pages that do not include this information are generally not trustworthy. Some very basic guidelines:

* .edu, .gov, and sometimes .org are, in order, generally the most reliable domain names. .com has to be judged on a case by case basis.

* Locate author name and publication info. If you can’t, don’t use it.

* Be careful with satirical and propaganda sites. They can be tricky. Cf. http://www.christwire.org & https://www.darkmoon.me

* Make sure there is some standard other than the person’s own that he or she answers to.
