How Your Resume will be Graded:
Many things on a resume are objective (cut and dried, right or wrong). Because leaving these mistakes on a resume will result in an employer throwing away your resume 99.9% of the time (or greatly reduce the chances of your resume being read in detail), we will take off points for these items. These items are based on the textbook and PowerPoint presentation in the classroom folder.
Other areas of a resume are subjective – people have different opinions about what is right or wrong. For the subjective side of your resume, we’ll give you our opinions on what we think will help you to better “sell” yourself to an employer, and no points will be taken off.
In addition to your grade, you will receive an “Overall Effectiveness Score”. This score (1-5) reflects how effectively we believe your resume will market you to employers.
OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS SCORE
5 – Highly Competitive Resume: Your resume has an impressive amount of career-related/transferable experience; your experience is effectively marketed through your resume document.
4 – Competitive Resume: Your resume is strong, but one of the following areas needs to be addressed:
- Career-related/transferable experience is not fully exemplified through bullet statements
- Resume lacks consistency/readability in small areas
3 – Average Resume: Your resume is adequately or well written, but lacks the competitive edge needed to obtain interviews; you must gain career-related (internship, externship, volunteering, part-time job, etc.) experience and exemplify your marketability on your resume in order to be competitive in your career field.
2 – Resume Requires Revision: Your resume has some significant room for improvement related to format, content, and amount of experience. It is recommended that you schedule an appointment with your instructor.
1 – Unacceptable Document: Your resume lacks basic elements and is not ready to be circulated to employers. Please contact your instructor to set up an appointment to work on your document.

You need to write a resume and a separate reference page. Please be sure to start with the rubric provided in the 5.3 area of the Canvas module. It tells you very specifically what is required and how points will be distributed for this important submission. Next review the Resume Tips link in the beginning of Module 5. It has actual examples of resumes. The reference page should contain a variety of contacts that can indicate the type of worker and person you are to prospective firms interested in you. Use the same header on the resume and on the reference page. I would provide 3-4 names of past managers, co-workers and/or anyone from your network that can speak to your character, work ethic and skill level.
