What are some techniques to encourage the acquisition of high-frequency words in the classroom?
Have students write meaningful sentences using the high-frequency words. They can also write the word and a definition. They should write the definition so it makes sense to them. They can play games using the high-frequency words. A flashcard game is a good choice. They will turn the cards over then pick two or three at random to make a sentence out of. High-frequency words should not be drilled but included leisurely in stories. There are many activities you as a teacher can use to encourage the use of high-frequency words.
