The classroom teacher can assess the weaknesses and strengths of the readers so they can provide effective reading in the class. The classroom teacher needs to provide effective instruction and intervention at an early age. As the teacher, we should know what to look for in identifying a struggling reader. When trying to identity a struggling reader, a teacher should look for low ability and low reading achievement. "Low ability readers make up the largest number of poor readers. They tend to have lower than average IQ and have below grade level listening comprehension, word recognition, and reading comprehension performance" (Joseph, n.d.). It is suggested in order for all students to succeed in reading that a reading specialist be available to support them because of the wide range of student achievement.
