There are many potential barriers to motivating and engaging students in reading. One barrier in particular could be students who are not confident in their reading skills. These students will attempt to avoid reading assignments. One way to motivate or engage these students is to pair them with stronger readers and have them to read along together and then have them to discuss the reading together. This will give the student the opportunity to gain greater understanding from the reading. Another strategy would be to discuss the reading prior to assigning to students. It is important to relate the reading to something that the student can relate to and find interesting. This will engage the student into the reading.
