Counselor

I search the Monster website and found a counselor job that peaked my curiosity. My plans are to receive by bachelor degree in Psychology and then continue for my counselor degree. Right now I am inquiring about having a minor in sociology, of which I took an elective and really enjoyed it. However, for now I looked up jobs pertaining to counseling and I am thinking along the lines of school counseling or behavior counseling.

After reviewing the skills required being a counselor, critical thinking is one that I have learned about in my gen ed classes and it will definitely help me be more effective. When dealing with people, we need to be able to read between the lines a lot of times. Also, written and oral communications are skills that I have learned and it is also vital to the success of being a counselor. Every counselor must be able to communicate in ways that are understood and received. Lastly, problem solving is another skill that has been enhanced though my gen ed classes.

I would like to give back to my community by becoming a school behavior counselor. Being that I am a Pre-K teacher now, I see the benefit of having a behavior counselor on campus. It is easy for us adults to get off track in our thinking as well as our behavior; and even easier for a child. I work with and see kids struggling mental, who could really benefit from solid counseling, to let them know it is going to be ok.

While it is great to talk about a potential dream career, it’s more important to make obtainable goals towards a desired career. With, after earning my B.A. in Liberal Arts and (in the future) a Master’s in Psychology with a minor in Counseling, my dream career is to be a Psychologist. According to Career Builder’s web site, some skills needed to be a psychologist include; having organizational skills, acting as a consultant, have a doctoral degree from an APA (American Psychological Association) accredited university, interact with clients, and make mental health notes and narrative reports.

There was so much to learn here at Ashford University. To acquire so many useful skills that will transfer to ‘real life’ is incomparable. My advance technological skills that I have acquired have definitely been of great service to me in my professional life. For example, during work my manager wanted someone who could draft a report by the end of close of business. Obliviously, all of this time I have been writing papers every Monday for the past two years had really paid off so I could successfully complete that task. Another example would be my aid in listening to my youth and young adult group at church. Since I am the Young Adult and Youth Director it is imperative that I show care by listening and offering guidance when necessary.

In the future, it would be great to have a non-profit program in which I’m assisting homeless persons or homeless veterans get a fresh outlook on life. I would clean them up, get them an education, and have an agreement with a company where these new made-over people can be gainfully employed and in turn being an asset to society.
