Modern generations are applying ascetics and cosmetics in many unnecessary areas. A very good example is the food we decide to put in our bodies. It seems easier to purchase a clean and processed bag of carrots than to pay a little extra for what is actually healthy for you. Even when freshly pulled from the ground, a “dirty” carrot would be seen as unhygienic to consume in the public eyes. The substance used to grow our produce and nurture vegetation is called soil and should not be confused with plain old dirt.
In a journal by Anna Lappé’s, the author goes off to describe the underappreciated marvels of soil. It is not just tiny sediments of eroded rock and debris. Rather, it is home to a network of living microorganisms. Not only does soil contain an abundance of carbon, but it inhabits a vast variety of life. Indeed, it is interesting to know that there are more creatures living in a handful of topsoil than there are humans that populate this planet! These facts have just recently been socially recognized.Lappé, along with some environmental organizations, came together in to 2015 declaring it “The Year of the Soil” in efforts to educate the public and increase soil appreciation. The author et. Al understand the dangers that come with chemical fertilizers and pesticides. However, soil rich in life can better support or replenish forms of life. Lappé also enlightens her audience by stating soil health and human health have a direct correlation. When it’s fully of life, the soil is healthy, evidently contributing to a heathier life of a human.
A couple of years later, David Chandler publishes his work titled “Spills and Thrills.” His story starts off with a memory of NASA’S latest project at the time, Curiosity. The space rover did research on Mars and one day fumbled upon an unusual discovery of soil! The news was big, no doubt. Anything life related outside our own little world of existence is exciting; soil was a sure sign for some kind of life. However, skeptics managed to explain the organic materials found came from earth. Following the recollection, he introduces a couple of theories about the mistaken soil.
It’s no wonder how this news blew up with excitement, especially for those who have dedicated years to this project. Curiosity still roams the Red Planet, testing different samples of rock. What interested me the most was the presence of soil on another planet; it insinuates the idea of life. Even if there is not life out there, soil can hold the possibility for it. Information is valued and is accessible through research. Eventually, human can to move from where we are now to what is very little known to our species.
Soil is used for food security, biodiversity, and climate stability. We depend on this treasured resource and should not confused with lifeless dirt.
