Research topic: Coming of Age for Women in Islam [and in Development] in African Films {Note: Highlighting the Heroines: Positive Images of Women in African Film}

Project 2 (15 points for the presentation & 15 points for the essay). Total points=30

This group project is about doing research on an assigned topic and present in class. For this project, you will remain in your already organized groups as in project 1.

Essay

1.     Introduction

a.     Background information about the assigned topic. Note: the background information must be thorough and relevant to the issue(s), thesis, or themes that you want to focus on

b.     Of necessity, the background information of the assigned topic should include the geography, history, politics and culture, social and economic activities etc.

c.     Discuss the background information in a way that will set the stage for the discussion and narrative of the topic and/or film

d.     Your essay should help the audience to know the rationale behind the points introduced

2.     Relevant ‘thesis’ statement about the assigned topic, film trailers that you plan to show in class, or issue(s) you want to discuss. Show or tell us about ‘very unique films"

3.     Body of the presentation/discussion

a.     Consider a holistic picture i.e., ‘think outside the box’

b.     Argue in favor of  your point(s) or against other points raised elsewhere

c.     Share your opinion (connecting it with other local and international issues)

d.     Theme of the assigned topic, film or issue(s)

e.     Text discussion, character analysis, Hollywood’s portrayal,

f.      What impressions do you have about Africa after doing research about the topic or watching a film related to the topic?

g.     What do you like or dislike about the film?

h.     Discuss and/or argue in favor of your point(s) i. dissecting film theories, ii. Film versus documentary, iii. relate to contemporary African issues

i.      In your discussion compare and contrast the reading assignment and film to other reading materials and films about Africa from around the globe

j.      Compare the characters in the film to others in mainstream Hollywood and African cinemas
