There are 3 topics, you can pick one of three

1What function was served by new political ‘holy days’, such as Elizabeth’s accession day celebrations, or those to commemorate the failure of the Armada and the Gunpowder plot?

2 The nature, sources, and effects of anti-Catholic sentiment in the years after the Reformation.  You could examine such events as the Armada, Gunpowder Plot, “Glorious Revolution,” etc., or look at the publications leading up to the Civil War

3 Anglo-Scottish Union of 1707: As we’ll see in this course, the Union of 1603 ended up being quite limited. What kind of union happened in 1707, and why? What had changed to make union possible in 1707?

 3000 words. Paper must have a thesis statement and use at least 4 scholarly secondary sources, The use of primary sources is strongly encouraged.  Double space the text; insert page numbers; and use the History Department Style Guide (i.e., the Chicago Manual of Style) for references.
