Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to improve the critical reading and writing skills you have been developing all semester by analyzing literature in class discussions, informal reading responses, and short essays.  Since this essay is longer than the others, you will conduct and incorporate research in order to strengthen your argument.  Incorporating research will also show you the value of your own ideas as you place them in dialogue with those of experts in the field. As in any thesis-driven argument, you may use secondary source material in a variety of ways:  1) to support your close readings of different passages in the text, 2) to articulate the opposition to which you will then respond, 3) to define or clarify specialized terms, symbols, etc., and 4) to provide background essential to your argument that is not common knowledge.

Directions:  You have a lot of freedom in this essay.  Like the other essays, this essay must be a thesis-driven analysis of literature.  Your argument needs to be well-organized with clear topic sentences, and well-developed with support from your primary (plays, poems or short stories) and secondary sources (scholarly texts).  In addition to the primary source(s) you analyze, you must utilize and cite at least 4 secondary sources.  These may be scholarly books, scholarly articles and the like.  You may not use internet sources, including Wikipedia, as a source.
