 Introduction is engaging and provides a strong and focused thesis. Conclusion provides strong sense of closure.

Introduction is engaging and establishes a functional thesis. Conclusion provides general sense of closure.

Introduction is uninteresting, unclear, or lacks a clear thesis. Conclusion is vague or underdeveloped. Essay lacks clear closure.

Introduction and/or conclusion are non-existent. 

Paper displays clear and intentional organization. Essay is engaging and purposeful.

Clear consideration has been given to organization. Overall flow is strong.

Occasional lapses in focus and/or coherence. Paper jumps around without clear sense of direction.

No clear method of organization.

Argument is well developed. Claims are clear and paper stays focused on proving a specific point.

Argument is established. A majority of claims support the overall point. A few lapses in focus or clarity. 

Overall argument is hazy. A number of claims lack focus or do not help prove the paper's general or specific point. 

Paper is missing argument. Claims are not established or there is no specific purpose to paper.

Strong examples, quotes, sources logically connect to claims and argument. Evidence smoothly integrated.

Good examples, quotes, and sources support claims and argument. Integration of evidence could be improved.

Examples, quotes, and sources are present but may be underused or do not logically support claims and argument. Clear holes in evidence.

Evidence is missing or does not connect to claims and argument. 

Strong analysis of sources, examples, and evidence that clearly connects back to argument. Analysis shows thoughtful and logical consideration.

Analysis logically connects examples, sources, and evidence to argument. Some points may be too general or lack depth but a majority of the analysis is strong.

A significant amount of the analysis is too general or lacks depth. Does not provide logical connection back to argument.

Analysis is missing or does not connect back to the argument. 

Paper is free of grammatical or spelling errors.

Grammatical and spelling errors are rare and do not detract from paper.

Noticeable grammatical and spelling errors that compromise paper's overall quality. 

Excessive grammatical or spelling errors that make paper nearly unreadable.
