Weekly Reading Reflection Journal

It is essential for you to keep up with the readings and to read actively. Active reading means taking notes as you read, making a list of questions you have as you read, and reading far enough ahead that you have a chance to think about what you have read.Further, it's important that you critically analyze what you read. This reading journal is intended to help you build your critical thinking skills by applying the tools you learn in Browne and Keeley's Asking the Right Questions to the material you read in Crone's How Can We Solve Our Social Problemscourse articles, and videos.

Each week, in your reading journal, you will apply the critical thinking skills from Asking the Right Questions (don't summarize this material, apply it) to the weekly course readings. Each entry should include and clearly label the three-part structure outlined below Entries are due to Blackboard by Thursdays at 11:59PM each week starting in week #3.

Use the following 3-part format for your “Reflection Journal”:

PART I (SUMMARY OF ARGUMENT): The first stage in critical thinking is argument identification. This section highlights the main argument in each week’s readings.  Here you will briefly describe the main argument, social problem, consequences and/or solutions presented by the author(s).  Try to answer the following questions: "What is the author(s) trying to convince me of?""What reasons does he/she give?" Try to have no more than 5 key points, no fewer than 3.  Do not include many small details, but also avoid vague language.  It’s okay to use a few key details, statistics etc. to support your statement about a main idea, but the purpose here is to succinctly summarize the primary arguments put forth in the readings.  When applicable, be sure to discuss at least 2 solutions presented by the author.  Write this section as though the reader has NOT done the readings.  Refer appropriately to author(s) from assigned readings and cite sources. Be sure to make each key point a complete sentence; otherwise, it won't make sense and you'll lose points.

PART II (PERSONAL REACTION): This section involves a critical reaction and evaluation of Part I (including the solutions when applicable) presented by the author.  Only react to and thoughtfully evaluate the basic ideas that you highlighted in Part I. Be sure to cover at least two main points.  Take a stance.  Which of the arguments/solutions make more sense?  Are they logical? Is the evidence credible? Do you agree, disagree, and why.  Please use "I statements" as this should be your personal reflection and critique.  Your grade in this section is based on how reflective, thoughtful, questioning, & critical your response is.  Does it appear that you really understood and reacted to the material?  Always tell HOW you feel about a certain issue and WHY you feel that way (provide a rationale/justification).

PART III (PERSONAL REACTION AND APPLICATION TO SERVICE LEARNING): What was the ONE, MOST important, helpful,and/or interesting thing you learned from these particular readings?  Why was this so?  What meant the most to you and why, connecting the material to your everyday life AND service learning experience Ask yourself questions such as:  Has this new information changed me?  How?  Has it changed any of my actions/behaviors/thoughts in the present?  Will this new information alter my thinking/actions in the future?  How?  How does this new information apply to your service learning experience? How does this new information help you understand the root of the problems faced by the people you encounter/study at your service site? Here your grade is based on how well you connect with one aspect of the reading. Do not include any new information. This should be something that you already mentioned in PART I and/or II.
