Read the Judith Lorber article,"Night to His Day: The Social Construction of Gender in our textbook, Gender: A Reader for Writers Literary : Henry's father forced Henry to go on the Mary Selina to "grow up". On Page 33, In Lorber's "Night to His Day" article, she writes that "the onset of social adulthood is ritualized by the coming-out party or desert walkabout or bar mitzvah or graduation from college..." Although Henry and Nicolas are pretty young when they board the ship, did their experiences make them grow up? Cite at least two examples for each of actions or experiences that show a move towards adulthood? What might they learn about life from those experiences?
