Applying Ethical Concepts
Jeremy Hall
Specify the ethical issues that encircle the purpose or questions
The Granitz article revealed several potential sources, or determinants that can influence an organization’s ethics. The article outlines three determinant categories that contribute to the sharing of ethical reasoning in individual, social, and organizational determinants. Granitz (2003) notes that the purpose of the research was to examine the individual and organizational determinants to organizational ethics sharing and variation of ethical reasoning and moral intent. Further, Granitz (2003) explores the strength of each determinant in relation to sharing of both ethical reasoning and moral intent. Scenarios were utilized which presented ethical dilemmas measured through sharing scores, and regression analysis. The questions that linked the ethical issues to the populations under study were based off of economic, social, and cultural environmental factors.
Specify ethical issues that encircle the research problem
The research problem identifies a large gap between organizational ethical decision making and the large spectrum of ethics that each respective employee from the entire employee base operates within. The article further discusses the challenge that management faces in unifying a set code of ethics throughout the organization as well. The author reinforces the need for management comprehension towards sharing of ethical beliefs between company cliques.
Specify ethical issues that encircle the data collection
Granitz (2003) posited that the measurement of Machiavellianism, Locus of Control (LOC), personal moral intensity, organizational commitment, codes of ethics, and social ties would outline the social and organizational determinants that could support the four hypotheses outlined in the article. The likelihood of unethical behavior was measured for organizational sharing aspects through the aforementioned categories. The results for each category were relatively significant in support of their respective hypotheses. Specifically, the Machiavellianism-sharing survey showed that there was a higher likelihood of ethics sharing, and LOC externals were significantly stronger in sharing for a specific scenario. The way I interpret this information is that if the organization has strong social ties, and the overall organizational code of ethics from senior leadership that is communicated supports either type of social determinant then there is a higher likelihood of ethics sharing.
Specify the ethical issues that encircle the data analysis and interpretation
The article presents a well-supported argument with a position that supports an interpretation that employees have different levels of ethics intensity and can both share and reason collectively. This theory furthers that this behavior can vary as well with different types of environmental ethical dilemmas. Granitz (2003) further reinforces this thought in the conclusion of the article with the mentioning of social ties as a key determinant in influencing group ethics. The data-analysis breaks down the different groups under study into scenario based dependent variables that support hypotheses presented earlier in the article. I interpret the findings to support an overall theme that the people are social in nature and typically adopt the ethical code of the group or clique that they respectfully belong to within the organization.

Jeremy Hall,
Generally the response to the question was fair. However I feel that more could be done in explaining what the article was about. This would be very good indicator that you have understood the concept of this article. I like your analysis because they gave a very solid explanation of the question. Your manner of answering questions also shows that you have grasped the context. In general your work is good. I like the way you approached your questions. The response to the question is good and I appreciate the effort that has been put into it. I feel that you have really made interesting points. You have built up the ability of assessing the weaknesses and strengths of their individual work which is a very important part of improving your writing.

Michelle Morrow's Week 3 Forum/ DQ #1: Applying Ethical Concepts this is my originial Discussion Forum
Management.
Data collection is where the researcher gathers the information of a research that is according to the research problem and the purpose of the research. The ethical issues that surround the data collection process in a research include observing the voluntary participation principle. An essential ethical standard that the researchers should observe is the informed consent principle; this is whereby the researchers take the time to inform the target population about the purpose of carrying out the research. In this process the target population is told about the harm and the risks associated with the study they will carry, the researcher should not be tempted to hide this fact especially when they realize that disclosing this to them will hamper the research as the target population may not volunteer (Granitz 2003).
The sample or the population that the researcher is conducting information from should not be pressured nor forced to take part in a research, they should do it willingly. The other issue is that the researcher should assure the participants in a research that they will not expose their names or identity they will be anonymous that is the anonymity principle, in this principle the privacy of the participant is more assured though they at times that it is difficult to maintain it especially in instances that the researcher may require conducting the study a number of times on the same sample. The other issue is the confidentiality principle that the researcher should ensure his study population, this is where the researcher assures the participants that their sensitive information that may lead to their identification will not be disclosed to people that are not actively involved in the research. The other ethical issue is the issue of the risk of harm that a research may cause to the participants; the researchers should ensure that they do not harm the research participants while collecting data.
Specify ethical issues that encircle the research problem.
The research problem is the statement in an area that a researcher is concerned about, difficult situation that one wants to eliminate, a question troubling people or a condition that one wants to improve on. The research problem has got ethical standards that the researcher should consider when coming up with it. The ethical issues that surround the research problem in a research include; the research problem should not be one that goes against the protection of the human subjects that is the research problem should not be one that will cause harm to people as research on it. The research problem to be researched on should be one that does not go against the religious or the cultural beliefs of the people, the research problem should not be one that will make the researcher dig deep into religious or cultural practices that have been reserved over the years.
For example researching on the reason why Muslims worship and believe in Mohammed such a research problem will go against the practice of the Muslims and may lead to the criticism of the Muslim religion which is unethical. Another ethical issue is when the research problem is going against the legal practices of a country; the research problem should not be one that requires the researchers and the samples being used to go against the laws in a country.
Specify the ethical issues that encircle the purpose or questions.
The ethical issues that surround the purpose or the questions are that the purpose of the research should be clear and justifiable. The purpose of the research should be one that will bring benefit to a large group of people and not one that will only benefit a small group of people that is it should be socially responsible. The other ethical issue in the purpose or the questions is that it should not discriminate a group of participants it should be one that equalizes the participants and gives an equal chance to all of them. The other ethical issue is that the purpose or the questions should observe the principle of honesty throughout the research process.
Specify the ethical issues that encircle the data analysis and interpretation
Data analysis and interpretation come s after the data collection process is over, it where all the data that is carried out is presented to the group of researchers to discuss, give their comments and sum up the data to come up with the explanation to the research problem. The ethical issues in this stage are disclosure of the information gathered; the researchers may be tempted to hide important information from people. The other ethical issue is honesty the researchers are required to disclose the real and not false information to people about the results of the research. The other issue is plagiarism the researchers are not supposed to copy or give research findings that were made by other researchers before them and putting it on their own.
Discuss your experience with scholarly writing and research.
Scholarly writing can be referred to as academic writing as well. The scholarly writing and research experience at the beginning of the course were negative, this is because at first, I saw writing and research as very difficult tasks that I would not manage to do on my own especially without the help of our tutors or any other person in the classroom. Scholarly writing for example required one to use grammatically correct sentences, some formats and correct punctuations, this was not an easy thing at first but with frequent practice and several literature readings it became a little easier and interesting. Research requires one to be accurate and always positive and ready for anything that they may find in the process, the experience in research was fascinating I learned a lot since one is able to learn a lot of skills in the process. The research process enables one to acquire skills such as observing, interpreting, and analytical skills, this for me made the experience positive and made me desire to take part in the research process.
The scholarly writing and research experience were beyond my expectations and it is an experience that I would not mind taking part in. It enables one to learn the importance of following instructions given, being careful, ethical issues in the research problems and the values that one should observe in the process. Research enables one to have the urge to find out the reasons why things are the way they are, difficulties that people undergo and ways to overcome the and the solutions to the problems that people face that most are unanswered. Many students may not get the chance to take part in research and scholarly writing process or lessons but they are assured that the experience they would want to be part of thought at first, it is frustrating, one undergoes rejection and criticism but in the end, it is worth every effort invested in it. In this case, one is forced to be persistent and resilient in order to be able to get to a position in which they can comfortably carry out the research and perfectly write academic writing and at this time they will be in a position to witness the positive experience.

Re: Michelle Morrow's week 3 Forum/ DQ #1: Applying Ethical Concepts
SHENETT CAMACHO
Hello Michelle,
Honesty in research seems to be a high area of concern. You stated, “The other ethical issue is that the purpose or the questions should observe the principle of honesty throughout the research process”. It almost seems impossible to avoid such a slippery fallacy. There are many reasons for researchers to adhere to ethical norms during their research. If not simply for the purpose of the research, such as knowledge, truth, and avoidance of error, then for the trust, accountability, mutual respect, and fairness.
In addition, ethical norms help to ensure that researchers can be held accountable to the public. For instance, there are federal policies on research misconduct, conflicts of interest, and human subject’s protections (as you mentioned in your example of Muslims studies), can be held accountable to the public. Even with these safe guards in place to prevent since misguided information in research, why do you believe that the risk is still taken?

Granitz’s (2003) article “Individual, social and organizational sources of sharing and variation in the ethical reasoning of managers”, discusses the various determinates that can influence ethical behavior including individual, social and organizational influences and seeks to determine if knowledge sharing or cultural norms impacts moral intent or ethical reasoning. The author set forth and tested the following research hypotheses; (1) Individuals sharing similar individual characteristics, social ties or organizational culture will generally share similar ethical reasoning and moral intent and (2) social ties potentially are the most important source of ethical behavior (Grantiz, 2003, pp. 104-105).
The qualitative research methodology included a group of 26 tobacco industry marketing manager interviews and questionnaires that discussed general economic, social and cultural ethical dilemmas experienced by the participants. This phase allowed development of further questions based upon common organizational dilemmas mentioned by the participants. The quantitative research methodology was based on providing two different versions of the same ethical dilemmas. Questions and responses were measured against a set of characteristics including: Machiavellianism, Locus of Control (LOC), personal moral intensity, organizational commitment, codes of ethics and social ties (Grantiz, 2003, pp 106-108).
The research and article concludes that organizational sharing (i.e. cultural norms) was a major influencing factor in modeling ethical behavior. Social ties and moral intensity were the strongest influencing factors. Therefore, both organizational and individual moral intent and ethical behavior can be influenced by management via articulating set standards of ethical codes of conduct. Secondly, management support of those codes of conduct reinforced their applicability and also influenced ethical behavior. Lastly, individuals and subgroups of an organization have different levels of moral intent and ethical intensity. Therefore; individual and subgroup behavior can vary depending on the situation, their interpretation of the dilemma and the cultural environment in which it occurs (Grantiz, 2003, pp. 118-119).

I love your explanation about what the article of your discussion talks about. You have done it in a way that makes any reader understand what the whole article is all about even without reading it. Your work is a clear indication that you have developed your writing skills in the course of your course work. Enjoyed reading and replying to your post. My question to you would be is it even possible to develop an educational environment that is radically at variance with the larger culture of the community? Keep up the good work and I will see you out on next Week’s Discussion Forum Question.

What research and writing concepts have been insightful to you during this course so far?
I had a good deal of experience in researching peer reviewed and scholarly journals during my undergraduate studies. However, this course has already taught me that my methods for researching as well as understanding the framework of scholarly journals were largely inefficient. Specifically, the lessons in isolating the hypothesis and the specific problem an article is attempting to address has honed my focus. Understanding the studies under research in relation to the hypothesis has helped me further understand the articles as well. Further, comprehending the basic principles behind a quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research effort has helped refine my investigatory techniques.
Within our first week’s reading assignment, Creswell (2014) mentioned how the overall decision for which approach should be used to study and write on a topic should be based upon the philosophy of the researcher, research designs, data collection and analysis. This idea assisted in how I can identify more with how a researcher presents information to the reader, and similarly which method would best reinforce the respective authors’ hypothesis. The quantitative article analysis assignment from week two helped me see the basics of a quantitative study. Namely, the prompts that focused in on the objectives of the study, the survey instruments used, survey populations, study limitations, and a summary of the conclusions. Congruently, I can now follow along the path of instruction that the author lays forth more effectively. Looking back, if I had a firmer understanding during my undergraduate studies of how quantitative research encapsulates surveys and experiments, and while qualitative research depicts a social reasoning I feel that my research efforts would have been more fruitful.

Scholarly Writing Anthonise Davenport this is this student original post and please answer in a 100 words or more thank you so much.
In my past I have not had much experience with scholarly writing and research. However, I am happy for this experience to be expose to this type of writing. I do feel that with this experience I can be a better asset to my company and whatever I choose to do in my future. I believe by using research you are able to give a more concrete or valid opinion on whatever topic you are discussing. At the beginning of this course when I chose my topic on communication I no idea that there was so much information or research on a certain topic.
I believe by writing scholarly and using research helps open your mind to more information that other wise wouldn't be available to you. I think scholarly writing and research she be encourage in high school or at least freshman year of college. With this type of exposure you can write better papers and produce better outcomes. I have gain a great insight on how to accurately research and how to sight information correctly. In my future I plan on becoming a director of my department which is why I am getting my masters. When I become a director of my department part of my job would encompass me writing proposals and requesting grant money. I believe the knowledge I am gaining now will help me develop the my writing skills for my future assignments. So I truly believe these assignments and this course will definitely help improve my skills.

I love your self-assessment and the confidence you have in yourself. I think you did a really incredible job bearing in mind that you did not have a lot of experience in scholarly writing and research. Your insights on scholarly writing are well presented. Having not known what it was before, I feel you have really made good efforts to dig deeper on the topic and you have better understood it.
You’re not the only one who has that kind of feelings. Most writers and even including myself, experience a lot of inner critics, who whispers about all kind of fears when they write. It may be worthwhile to find out what your biggest fear about writing is, so you can work in a more targeted manner towards a solution. Wonderful post that you have here and I look forward to reading and replying to your next week’s Discussion Forum Question.

Re: Scholarly Writing Brian Blodgett Week #3 QT #2 can you please reply back to this student and put his name on it with a 100 words or word in a timely and professional manner. Thank you so much.
Michelle, I read your posting about letters and was thinking about historians who often do not have much more to go on than the events that occurred and were recorded in books and personal communication. Even books about the American Revolution were usually not written by the participants but much later and the information was gleamed off military records of events and letters. I believe that many people in some disciplines only think about those where quantitative studies can be done, or review of previous studies, interviews and questions to assist in quantitative research but some disciplines simply do not have that luxury.
If we did a qualitative study on George Washington, we would not find much (I expect) except that he lost more battles than he won, he won a few major ones, he France's help when it mattered the most, and that other generals actually won more battles than he did. Based on this would we still say he was the best general at the time, or ever in US history? What about his presidency, how would it relate to that of those that followed and how could we measure it since so much has changed over the past 200 plus years. Sometimes letters can also shed important information and when you mentioned that they were not recoverable, in many cases this is true but in others they are recoverable.

As I’ve been furthering my education for a decade now, I’ve had my share of scholarly writing. Scholarly writing, or academic writing, is the level of writing for all academic fields. Some would believe only full papers can be considered as scholarly writing, but that isn’t entirely true. Any form of academic writing constitutes scholarly writing to include our discussion forms and weekly article analysis papers. This is the first course that I’ve taken that required two separate discussion forums. At first, I wasn’t entirely pleased, but the topics of discussion aid in further developing my scholarly techniques.
From my experiences one key to producing well-defined scholarly work is to avoid the certain pitfalls. One of the most common that I’ve seen is using long, wordy sentences, which blurs the actual statement. The document only becomes complicated and seemingly evasive. Another common pitfall that I’ve seen is the use of additional words to meet the word count requirement. I understand that it isn’t always easy to find information on a topic and that can lead one to run into this pitfall, but the writer is only swapping the loss of points for accumulating a surplus of useless wording for a shortage in their word count. In my preference, I would rather end with a strong, yet short scholarly level document rather than a verbose document to only meet the word count. Doing this can really ruin the quality of the article.
I can say that I’m perfect though, as I’ve fill into more than one of these pitfalls in past courses. Only through my instructors, have I worked on strengthening my writing techniques and producing scholarly level work. It is a never ending process that can only be improved through time and practice.

Hello Michelle,
Firstly, thank you for your positive feedback, To answer your question, I believe that I do. In my military experience, I’ve had an abnormal amount of stressful situations present itself and I’ve always had to remain calm and determine the best course of corrective action. It is simply imperative. Even when I had substandard managers attack me in unprofessional manners and attempt to provoke me to anger, I remain calm, gather my thoughts and take on the situation to where I remain professional, yet still get my point across. This is all a part of my ideology on self-improvement. I’m constantly working to improve myself, always acknowledging that I’m not perfect, nor never will ever be. The approach has kept me balanced in all I do with positive results.
Scholarly Writing Eric Richardson's Week 3/ QT #2 can you please reply to her post with a 100 words or more thank you so much.
During this course I have learned how to apply scholarly writing and research to my essay writing style. Learning how to utilize punctuations, spelling, and other rules in a sentence has been very helpful while preparing for my next course. Those elements are codified in the rules we follow for clear communication, allowing us to focus our intellectual energy on the substance of our research (Manual of the American Psychological Association, p. 14). It has given me data which I can you use in my organization for writing performance evaluations, awards, and memorandums. For example, as a soldier in the Army, we have a different writing style which requires a lot of military jargon not often used in the civilian sector.
I try to use what I have learned to assist my subordinates when it comes to counseling their soldiers monthly. I think having a document free of errors, with correct punctuations, and grammar displays professionalism. Also, scholarly writing providing with the full text of the article I retrieved through the school library. Scholarly research narrowed my data base search by allowing me to search only scholarly articles or journals. Scholarly journals are different from periodicals, where as the information provided in the journal contains information specific to a certain topic; therefore, listing references from the source.
Scholarly research has provided me with reputable authors who are experts in academic or professional field. The articles informed me about original research and experimentation by providing graphs, charts, or photographs that supported the research. The format of the article was plain, usually in black and white; this allowed the ease of reading.
