The Adobe Web site has a great video on using different types of masks. You can watch it here: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/photoshop/articles/lrvid4003_ps.html. The video is for CS4 but the concepts taught should apply to CS5 as well. It might give you some ideas for your final project.
