Research/Reaction Paper – News Item Analysis  (100 points). From the Kearney hub Kearney news paper website (www.kearneyhub.com) from January 10, 2015 to April 1, 2015 found a newspaper articles (or articles from reputable online news sources), with the date they appeared, that (pertain to any aspect of child abuse or neglect). (These articles can be write-ups about a case, discussion of policy related to abuse or neglect of a child or children in the state of Nebraska). descriptions of a new program, etc.  (If you see television news coverage of a child abuse or neglect story, look for a related print article in the newspaper or online.) You should think critically about the news stories, considering how they relate to the information being discussed in the course.  You are encouraged to share the information with your classmates and news items will often be incorporated into class discussion.
 
For the writing assignment, you will choose one of the news items to critically evaluate, integrating information learned in the course and applying current scholarly research to a specific issue of child maltreatment in order to understand the issue on a deeper level.  The paper (5 to 6 pages) will incorporate a minimum of 5 sources from recent academic journals.  Government reports or credible online sources may be used as additional sources. Your paper must be written in APA format (6th edition – using a 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, with one inch margins).  Additional guidelines for the project will be provided in class.  This project is worth 100 points.  Since collaboration and teamwork are important skills in professional practice, you have the option of working with one other student on this assignment.  Students who opt to do a co-authored paper must be committed to sharing the workload equitably.
