Section 3: Ethics in Research
You can probably name a study or two where unethical research was conducted on human beings. At times, this can cause significant harm. For example, a group of rural black men living near Tuskegee, Alabama thought they were being given free medical care for syphilis when in reality they were denied the cure. The Tuskegee case is only one example of researchers treating study subjects unethically, which has caused the government to impose federal regulations to assure that all studies involving humans are ethical and truthful to subjects. Northcentral University takes its responsibility very seriously and requires all research by any university member to be reviewed by the Institutional Review Board. In this section, you will explore the requirements for research at Northcentral.

Assignment 3 CITI Course; Ethics
In accordance with federal regulations and Northcentral policy, all research conducted by faculty, staff, and Learners, including funded as well as unfunded projects, involving human participants must be reviewed and approved by an appropriately constituted committee before such investigations are undertaken.
At Northcentral, it is the responsibility of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to review and evaluate all research proposals, including those designed as dissertations. The primary purpose of the IRB review is to protect from undue risk and ensure the safety, welfare, rights, and dignity of all research participants. The nature of the IRB review is determined by the type of research activity proposed.

CITI: Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects
Steps for CITI Training
Main Task: Complete the CITI Course to Prepare an Ethics Paper
All individuals planning to conduct research must complete a web-based program called Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), a Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects. The course may require 4-6 hours to complete, but does not have to be conducted in one session. You will be completing required modules for the Social and Behavioral Sciences; note there are optional modules and there are modules you may complete for Biomedical Research.
The IRB may require additional modules if needed for your research investigation.
If you have successfully completed CITI in a previous course, you may submit the earlier certificate of completion.
If you have lost the certificate, contact CITI:
[email protected]
Please DO NOT contact your instructor for technical assistance or lost certificates.
Please follow the step-by-step instructions outlined in the Steps for CITI Training document to register for and complete your CITI training.
Part I:
When you complete the course, you will see a screen containing your certificate of completion. Save this page. Then upload the saved file to your Mentor as the first part of this Activity.
Part II:
Develop a paper as the second part of this activity. This paper should include an assessment of any ethical concerns for your intended research topic as well as a brief review of the IRB Application.
Length: 3-5 pages not including title and reference pages
Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University's Academic Integrity Policy.
Submit your document in the Course Work area below the Activity screen.
