Section 4: The Future of Transportation Security

In the Signature Assignment, you have the opportunity to demonstrate a mastery of the lessons learned throughout this course. Securing the U.S. transportation network is no simple task as the movement of people and cargo is a mammoth task. A security failure risks people’s lives and their livelihood.

The security challenges associated with each transportation mode differ but are similar in some aspects. People and cargo must safely transit the networks. The modes interconnect and stretch across national and international boundaries. An understanding of this interaction is a critical element of ensuring the security and economic welfare of the nation.

Main Task: Compare and Contrast Security Requirements and Levels of Security
Assume that you are a staff officer within the Department of Homeland Security and must provide a briefing on the transportation security of the United States to a new political appointee. In a PowerPoint presentation, compare and contrast the security requirements and level of security of the United States transportation network. As a minimum, address the following issues:
•Road transportation security concerns
•Rail transportation security concerns
•Pipeline transportation security concerns
•Aviation transportation security concerns
For each of the above categories, identify specific examples to illustrate your findings. Provide recommendations for mitigating risks in the future to avoid potential threats.

Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as “speaker notes” for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.

Support your presentation with at least 7 scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.

Length: 15-20 slides (with a separate reference slide)
Notes Length: 200-350 words for each slide
