Imagine that you work in the marketing department for XYZ Company and you are launching a new product. You decide to hire a PR agency for the task. However, your organization’s senior management does not understand why you need a PR agency when you can use your local newspaper or the marketing department. This assignment requires you to provide justification for using the PR agency to the management. Your response should show a conceptual and practical understanding of public relations as a field by using relevant illustrations.

Assignments will be judged on clear thinking, relevant illustrations, and the use of credible sources (at least 3) from reputable newspapers, books or academic journals. You will also be expected to adhere to effective essay writing guidelines.

Grading will be based on the following components:

ORGANIZATION (5 points)

• The introduction provides a sufficient background on the topic and previews major points
• Central theme/purpose is immediately clear
• Structure is clear, logical, and easy to follow
• Subsequent sections develop/support the central theme
• Conclusion/recommendations follow logically from the body of the paper

Style/Mechanics (5 points)

Format

• Citations/reference page follow guidelines (APA)
• Properly cites ideas/info from other sources
• Paper is laid out effectively--uses, heading and other reader-friendly tools
• Paper is neat/shows attention to detail

Grammar/Punctuation/Spelling

• Rules of grammar, usage, punctuation are followed
• Spelling is correct

Readability/Style

• Sentences are complete, clear, and concise
• Sentences are well-constructed with consistently strong, varied structure
• Transitions between sentences/paragraphs/sections help maintain the flow of thought
• Words used are precise and unambiguous
