Project ¡Yo! - Thesis, Introduction, Outline

profileprtneesswdly

Your Project ¡Yo!assignment for the week is to complete an introductory paragraph with thesis statement and an outline. Follow these reminders:

  1. Base your thesis, introduction, and outline on the topic you chose previously.
  2. Make sure your thesis statement expresses a clear and concise blueprint on the topic you have chosen. Place the thesis statement at the end of your introductory paragraph.
  3. Your introductory paragraph should:
    1. Begin with an "attention getter" (a quote, an observation, an intriguing fact or anecdote, etc.)
    2. Transition from the "attention getter" to the thesis.
    3. Contain your thesis as its last sentence (or two).
  4. Create the formal outline for the essay next. Use complete sentences. (Check once more the instructions in the Week 03 Project ¡Yo! - Introduction.See also some helpful tips in Guidelinesfor Your Thesis in Course Materials.)

A Note on Outlining

Even though you are just beginning your research, you may already have some quotes or references. Go ahead and put these in now. Then as your research base deepens, you can methodically add more elements. Keep track of details for your APA cited references at the end.

If you invest time and energy in your outline now and in the days to come, you will find that fleshing out the first draft of your paper will come more easily. The more you take time in the early stages, the more you will save yourself time and stress later on. It will be worth it!

Submit your completed assignment to the drop box below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

Week 03 - The Harlem Renaissance

The Big Picture

In Literature of American Minorities, you are reading selected works by several groups of so-called minority authors of the United States. The intent is to learn about some of the important literary movements and themes within their cultural contexts. To apply your learning, you will read and study the novel ¡Yo!, by Julia Alvarez from the Dominican Republic.

Goal

Write a 6-7 page research paper in which you critically evaluate the novel, ¡Yo!, on a structural or thematic level. You may also choose to compare and contrast the structural or thematic elements of the novel with those of another fictional text you have read, either in this course or elsewhere.

Due

Project ¡Yo! is due at the end of Week 11, but preliminary pieces of the assignment are due during Weeks 03-10, according to the following Time Line. You will receive feedback along the way to help you do the best job possible.
