As you eluded, the matrix is structure is composed of dual lines of authority that evolved to improve horizontal coordination and information sharing.  The company is structured one way and the departments may run things differently.  This combination of functional and divisional structures (Daft, 2012, p. 322) becomes more complicated when there is more than one manager overseeing a department.

 

What happens when the two approaches don’t match?  Which decision is ultimately followed? (Provide an example.)
