Riverbend City - A Case Study in Multicultural Empathy.

Overview

If you have not already done so, view Riverbend City: Human Services Case Study Mission. In it, you will share the experiences of a Hmong family after their young child is injured during a train derailment in the fictional Riverbend City.

By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assignment criteria:

·         Communicate in a professional manner, using scholarly resources that support the analysis through clear, concise, well organized, and grammatically correct writing that incorporates appropriate APA style and conventions.

Assignment Instructions

For this assignment you will write a three-page paper exploring the critical issues raised during this cross-cultural interchange. Include at least five references from peer-reviewed sources that support your approaches and positions. The paper should consider the following:

·         Analyze the role culture plays in a conflict.

§  What problems and issues resulted from the cultural differences between key groups?

§  From the hospital's point of view, what cultural traits made Lu Vang's treatment more complex?

§  From the Vang family's point of view, what cultural issues complicated their interactions with the medical staff?

·         Explain the role of empathy in cultural competence.

§  Discuss instances where the cultural misunderstanding could have been mitigated if people had been empathetic.

·         Appraise culturally appropriate intervention strategies.

§  What kind of cultural training could have enhanced the medical staff's effectiveness in this situation?

§  Why is this training appropriate and what should it achieve?

·         Apply theories on empathy to the understanding of multicultural conflict resolution.
