In this assignment, you will explore the history of prejudice and historical examples of prejudice, stereotyping, bigotry, and discrimination. Consider how prejudice against people who are considered “different” is perpetuated from generation to generation, and examine the consequences of persistent prejudice in society. You will identify examples of prejudice, stereotyping, bigotry, and discrimination and explain the underlying causes of these societal woes. Finally, you will reflect upon and describe the rewards of a society without prejudice.

To prepare:

•Review the definition of terms at the end of Chapter 1 in the course text (pp. 19–20).

•Review Chapter 2 in the course text, paying particular attention to the section titled “The Perpetuation of Prejudice” through the end of the chapter.

•View all of the media selections in the Resources for this week. Note: The Optional Resources contain some excellent video media from the ACLU.

•Think about historical examples of prejudice, stereotyping, bigotry, and discrimination. Which of these examples still persist today? What have been the consequences?

•Consider some contemporary examples of prejudice, stereotyping, bigotry, and discrimination. What are the underlying causes for the examples you provided? What are likely consequences if they persist?

•Finally, think about the rewards of a society without prejudice.

Submit by Day 7, using the APA Course Paper Template (6th ed.) (see the Resources) to format your document, a 2- to 3-page essay in which you do the following:

•Identify at least two specific examples of prejudice, stereotyping, bigotry, and/or discrimination.

•Describe each of the examples, using at least one historical example and one contemporary example. These may come from the book or from your life experience.

•Explain the major cause(s) for each of your examples.

•For each of your examples, explain how prejudice, stereotyping, bigotry, and/or discrimination is/are perpetuated.

•For each of your examples, explain the consequences of the prejudice, stereotyping, bigotry, and/or discrimination.

•Describe what you think would be the benefits of a society free of prejudice.

Support your assertions by making at least two documented references to your course readings, following the examples of documentation in “Common Reference List Examples” (see the Resources for this week). Please use proper APA formatting to cite each of your sources.
