Among the “five forces” of Porter’s model bargaining power of suppliers from the perspective of raw materials, for example, could give way to pressure being placed on certain companies to comply in subtle ways. Which is some cases, an industry analysis should be considered because the idea is not to declare an industry attractive or unattractive, but to understand the root causes of profitability. As much as possible, analysts should look at industry structure quantitatively, rather than be satisfied with lists of qualitative factors (Dess, Lumpkin, Eisner and McNamara, 2011, p. 68). Outsourcing is often a precursor in cases of bargaining power. There are a few common reasons for great bargaining power of suppliers such as: great concentration of suppliers - few suppliers, great switching costs related to changing supplier and forward integration.

What ways do you believe more intense competition is likely to be within the industry where there are less competitive industries are seen as more attractive and profitable?

The “five-forces” model developed by Michael E. Porter has been the most commonly used analytical tool for examining the competitive environment. It describes the competitive environment in terms of five basic competitive forces.

              1. The threat of new entrants.

              2. The bargaining power of buyers.

              3. The bargaining power of suppliers.

              4. The threat of substitute products and services.

   5. The intensity of rivalry among competitors in an industry (Dess, Lumpkin, Eisner and McNamara, 2011, p. 55).

Porter’s analyses is based on root causes of profitability in being able to choose appropriate time frames as well as the ability to quantify the five-forces as it relates to good industry. Good industry looks thoroughly at the structural foundation of profitability.

In what ways could you apply Porter’s “five-forces” to your statement, “India’s successful software industries stems from three main factors or clusters such as the supply of talent, connections to the global market, and the freedom for entrepreneurs to experiment?”
