Poetry Essay:

For the subject of this essay, you will write about three poems using the following as a guide
• Paying attention to how poems describe and invoke feeling can help us discover a language for our own feelings. At the same time, being conscious of feelings that we already have, can help understand and interpret poems.
• A poem’s vivid language can help us understand and identify with subject matter or experiences that may be foreign to us.
• Try to approach every poem with openness to new experiences, feelings, and ideas.
• There is no such thing as “mastering” a poem; good poetry stands up to many re-readings.
• Poems become more accessible when we approach them systematically and learn to ask the right questions. Some useful preliminary questions involve thinking about the role of title, situation, speaker, and traditions in a poem.
Rita Dove “Fifth Grade Autobiography” is the main one and I will provide to others as secondary sources. please include a separte works cited page.
