Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two of them. What advice would you give this student if he/she encounters skepticism from community members? How can teachers help bridge the community and the school?
I must my community which is St.Thomas do have a lot of people from different cultures. They have called it a melting pot. Some examples of people wih different cultures in my community are Hispanics, Haitians, English people, Mexicans and many more of diverse backgrounds. My nail specialist is fom Vietnam and she move here to open her own buisness. I am open to learning new cultures and languages. We cannot ignore the fact that people of different cultures are part of our society. In an article by greatschools.org states that “The Census Bureau projects that by the year 2100, the U.S. minority population will become the majority with non-Hispanic whites making up only 40% of the U.S. population.” So therefore all schools must be prepared to deal with these children coming from different cultures and speaking different languages other than English.
In my classroom I have two Hispanics students and one Haitian student. The surprising thing is that the Haitian child can speak both French and Spanish. Her father is from Santo Domingo and her mum from Haiti. She is mixed. In this case I would invite a person who is bilingual and very fluent in Spanish, French and English.to speak to the class. They will be able to relate and help students in their transition to learning English because they may have experiences themselves. Also this person should be able to assist them to understand our culture and still use theirs as well. I myself can at times assist the French student withers studies because I can speak that language.
I believe that students who go to schools with a diverse group learn from each other culture, language and background. They can teach other and find out different things about each and understand each other. For example, a child would be interested to know something in Spanish. Jomar was learning English he would say muchas gracias. I would say it in English. The other student who speaks only English would ask what did you just say, he will replied thank you. On this note she learn a new word in Spanish and he learn to say thank you in English.
I honestly feel it is necessary to involve different community entities in your school so that cultural diversity is appreciated. In my days going to school in my community everyone watches out for each other. I could never delay to school my neighbor or people down the road would tell my parents. The community plays a vital role in children lives and also their education. They can assist us as teachers to help students who have language barriers. In my community our resources to hire bilingual teachers is limited for funds. We can ask the community to engage bilingual speakers to set up programs to help students understand the language. For example, volunteering in after school programs that teach English as a second language. Also we can asked them to visit school on days of celebration of their culture and demonstrate some play or activities for children,
Also communities can help to keep culture alive by doing and providing translation to the schools to help students. Also they can help organized workshops and training to teachers who are interested in learning about students’ culture and language. The community needs to be involved in the school as much as possible as they are capable of assisting them. This will help students move forward to their goals especially learning English.
