Controlling Class Climate

Name of Task

Balancing on a Balance Beam

Type of Authority in Decision Making Role

·         Setting up the balance beam, the size being 16.4 ft. long by 4 in. wide.

·         Underneath the beam and extending around the sides of the beam placing thick gym mats.

·         Have the students form a straight line behind the beam and having students go one at a time. Instruct the students they need to keep their hands straight out and place one foot in front of the other to walk across the beam. Once finished, they will then go to the end of the line.

Recognition of Achievement

·         If the student falls off the beam, the students will clap and say “nice try” and “good work”.

·         If the students walk all the way across, they will clap and say “great job” and “way to go”.

Grouping of Children

Because the beam is not large enough to have more than one student on at a time, there will only be one student on the beam and all other classmates will form a line behind the beam.

Evaluation

The teacher will assess each student and watch them attempt the task a few times. Watching for those who struggle if there is something in their technique or balance that is causing them to continue to fall and assist them in conquering the beam.

Time Constraint

Class is 30 minutes long. Students will get a few practices and then they will work on getting across without falling. Once this has happened, they will be able to go and play around until everyone has finished.
