Personal Essay
During the next 3 weeks, you will write and revise a 350- to 700-word personal essay. Each week, you must submit a different phase of your writing to complete the essay. For this week's assignment, you will choose your topic and explore your prewriting method. Refer to the overview and animations of the Craft of Writing topics in the MyFoundationsLab®, if you have not yet mastered this week's module. Select a topic for this essay from the following list. (Note: You may wish to refer to your Part 2 of Patterns for College Writing text for more details on which type of personal essay you would like to write.) Explain or support an issue in your community about which you are passionate. Take a stand or explain the issue. The essay should be persuasive or expository. Describe a person in your life who has influenced you in some way. What personality characteristics does this person have? Why was this person influential? This essay should be narrative and descriptive. Describe an event in your life that has changed you in some way. Why was this moment important to you? How were you different after the event? This essay should be narrative and descriptive. Compare yourself to a mythological hero. What characteristics do you share with him or her? How can his or her heroic feats help you strengthen your own character? This essay should be a comparison and contrast essay. Create a topic of your own for your personal essay. Submit your topic to your instructor for approval. Experiment with some of the prewriting methods found in Ch. 2 of Wordsmith to explore the topic you have chosen. Write a 350-word document detailing your application of your chosen prewriting method to begin exploring and writing about your topic.
