Technology today has made life easy for those of us on the go.  We are able to check our bank balances via phone and internet, pay our bills online, purchase items online, file our taxes online, and the list goes on.  A big concern to many with the having the convenience of the online we are at risk of someone hacking all of our private information as it is out there floating in the internet.  Along with the convenience of these things we are able to purchase and stream movies and/or music straight to our televisions, phones, and other devices such as iPods.   In most cases we pay for the movies and music through services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and ITunes, but in some cases these items are for free.  The sites that usually have music and movies for free are doing so illegally and I believe this would be a violation of copyright laws as they do not have permission to have the items available for the public.  This takes away money from the actors and artists who have created the movie or songs being downloaded for free.

With the internet so prevalent these days, it’s hard for the law to protect every action that occurs by its users. The internet is used just about every day in most people’s lives. With technology at the palm of everyone’s hand whether it’s by using the computer or cell phone, there are concerns regarding people hacking into businesses and personal accounts or downloading music for free. There is no way to put a stop to these crimes because the internet is so large and anyone can access it.  I have had someone get access to my debit card and charge over $800 dollars at Macy’s in New York City. Luckily my bank caught the fraudulent activity and stopped it and informed me, but there was not legal actions taken on who ever used my debit card. It difficult for the law to get justice on people that do that which is an issue because these people can be repeat offenders and continuously try to steal money from innocent people like myself. There is not an easy way to punish people that commit these crimes which is something that needs to be changed so innocent people can get justice.

I feel like the largest issues that will be major concern in regard to the law and business practices is hacking. Protecting consumer’s information, such as bank account, addresses, telephone numbers and social security numbers can be difficult when you have experienced hackers that know how to get around all of the protection and security that businesses have to prevent such things from occurring. According to Rogers, “The largest data breach in 2014 occurred earlier in the year when an eBay database was hacked, resulting in over 145 million customer records being compromised”(2012) You look at eBay which is a large established business and they were effected by hacking. It seems like no one is safe from hacking, big businesses, smalls businesses and individuals. It’s an ongoing problem that I don’t for see ending.

What legal concerns are raised by these issues?

With the development and growth of the Internet and the continuing growth of technology, opportunities have opened new business ventures. It has also opened new ways for individuals to commit fraud and new avenues to make money. All the issues listed in the scenario the law has to protect people/companies property. The law needs to prosecute when possible which will possibly discourage people from possibly breaking these laws.

Predict which of these issues will be of major concern in the future regarding the law and business practices.

I predict that security and privacy issues will be the biggest concern in the future. In the past couple of years, we have seen more and more companies getting hacked and their customer’s information to include credit card information being stolen. We’ve seen more and more ransomware taking place at hospitals, business, and personal computers. The legislators need to create new laws to deal with these issues, and business has to improve ways to protect themselves.

What legal concerns are raised by these issues?

In today's culture, almost everyone uses the internet whether it be for business or personal use.  Yes, technology does make it easy to copy and distribute music and movies without paying royalties. Napster music, founded by Shawn Fanning back in 1999 at the age of 19 and he created it while messing around on the web at the University of Michigan.  He allowed users to download and share copyrighted music. Metallica and Dr Dre were just a couple of the top names who filed suit against the company and won. (Agencies, 2000)
Other legal concerns raised by these issues would these that are associated with intellectual property theft. Which are described above.  Phishing, where the victim receives an e-mail that appears to come from a site such as PayPal, eBay, or a bank, asking her to verify her account information. Clicking on the link provided takes the victim to a "dummy" site, one that appears to look legitimate but in fact is a clever counterfeit. When the victim logs in, her account information is then transmitted to the phisher. (Rogers, 2012) The progression of technology is the conclusion of the phishing and fraud.

Predict which of these issues will be of major concern in the future in regard to the law and business practices.

I feel that the major concern in the future in regards to the law and business practices would be piracy. As I mentioned earlier about Napster Music getting shut down from record sharing for copyright infringement. The record companies/artists were not receiving compensation for their music. It was a huge monetary loss for the music industry. With the upgraded technology we now have it has expanded the options for higher frequency and with the television and film industry also facing the same problems.
We now have from Apple products including iPod and Macintosh Music store where business ethics are in place.  As for the film and television industry, there is still much work to do to protect them against piracy.

Hi Annette - I very much appreciate your well-considered initial discussion board response! What do you think is one key step that you think a multinational corporation should take to ensure that it has effectively safeguarded the privacy of employee records?

Best,
Roger
