Part A Choose one of the five areas of Reading (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Fluency) from the Instructional Considerations for ELLs in the Five Areas of Reading and summarize the considerations that teachers must make for English language learners in this area. Part B Locate your grade appropriate Sunshine State Standards for Language Arts (on the Multicultural & ESOL website www.broward.k12.fl.us/esol/ -under Best Practices) and choose one standard (this can be any standard that will allow you to incorporate listening, speaking, reading, and writing practice). Then think about assignments/activities that help students to master this standard. You may use activities/strategies suggested in the text, Instructional Considerations for ELLs in the Five Areas of Reading, and/or the Instructional Strategies Matrix www.broward.k12.fl.us/esol/. Provide an overview (this does not need to be a full lesson plan) of how you would deliver a lesson(s) for this standard that would incorporate the four modalities of language. Explain how you would differentiate instruction to meet the language needs for students at each level of English language proficiency (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced). Part C Considering the many topics we have covered in this course (first and new language development, the history of English, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, four modalities of language, etc.), explain what is currently working effectively in your class to develop your students’ language skills.
