Write an original poem, short story or dramatic monologue inspired by one of the works read for class, Songs of innocence and Songs of Experience William Blake, Diary of a Madman Nikolay gogol, and Antigone by Sophocles and then write a short examination of the process.

How is literature created?

Although Literary Heritage is primarily a study of the effects of literature after creation, it remains important to understand how it is created in the first place. This assignment is designed to allow you to become an author—that is to create a work of literature. This assignment has two components: the original creative work and the analysis of creation.

Part One: Original Creative Work

This portion will not be graded on content. That is to say I won’t be grading you on how good the work is, so don’t get hung up on being perfect. You will be graded on two points: connection to work and correct grammar, mechanics, and usage. If you choose to write a poem, please choose a Blake or Dove poem as a form model. If you choose to write a short story, it should be between 2,000 and 3,000 words. If you choose to write a dramatic monologue, you will need to write a short paragraph before the monologue setting up the scene by explaining the conflict, the character

Part Two: Analysis of Creation

Please write a 250 to 500 word response that answers the following questions:

1. What work inspired your creative work and how did that work inspire you?

2. What did you learn about literature by writing this piece?

3. How did writing this piece change the way you read literature?

The response should be in paragraph form and should be an exploration of the assignment—think of each question as a jumping off point for a paragraph.
