Certain themes recur in poetry over time. These themes may be quite general, such as love or death, but they may also be very specific, such as death due to war, sorrow over lost love, or the influence of art.

Select one theme that has reoccurred in poetry over time.

Write a 1,750- to 2,450-word paper comparing how poets treated this specific theme in the different periods you have studied to date. In other words, use poetry from the first four weeks.  Answer the following in your paper:

• How have poetic treatments of this theme changed over time?
• How has a specific culture’s expectations for a poem and poet shaped poetic treatments of this theme?

Illustrate your points with examples from the course readings. Incorporate specific examples from each of the first four weeks of reading.

Include at least five references other than The Norton Anthology of Poetry.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines unless you are an English major; then use MLA . This paper should be written in third person.
