Assignment:

Outline the evolution of whales from land dwelling animals to aquatic mammals. Begin your outline with a paragraph definition of what is meant by the evolutionary phrase “Descent with Modification.” Rather than an essay, produce a detailed outline of the major modifications that occurred during this transition. These major modifications include hearing, propulsion, shape, limbs, breathing among others. Including drawings, diagrams and pictures will be helpful.

Begin with the land dwelling animal named Pakicetus (Pakicetidae) and end with Mysticetes (Mysticeti) and Odontocetes (Odontoceti).

Fore each species:

1.     Describe each species (no more than a short paragraph) (a minimum of 7 different species including those listed above)

2.     Include the anatomic modification for living in the aquatic environment (changes from the previous species in the lineage that made it better adapted to living in the water).

3.     Environment each species lived in.

4.     Geologic Time range.

You will be able to find this information readily available on the Internet. Make sure that you are using a science education website.
