Hi, I am working on an SPSS assignment and I have half a problem done but don't understand the other half of it, or at least can't figure out whether it's two tailed and what the t critical value is for a sample that is 125. It's too big, but because it's spss, my professor wants us to use the t tables for this. I'm not sure how to get the answers for g through j. 

This is what I have so far

2) Part II: Over many years of testing, I have considered the population mean of Final Grade (finalgrade) for my statistics class to be μ = 86. Suppose I was curious whether my students from 2009 were significantly different than all of my other students over several years. I took a sample of data from those students and posted the data on NYU Classes (Resources>SPSS Assignments > SPSS Assignment Data > Assignment Undergrad Data D. Using this data, test this hypothesis. Answer the following questions: 

a) H0: μ=86; the mean final grade for the sample of statistics students from the class of 2009 is the same as the mean final grade for the population of statistics students over the years. 
b) H1: μ≠86; the mean final grade for the sample of statistics students from the class of 2009 is not the same as the mean final grade for the population of statistics students over the years. 
c) To investigate the null hypothesis stating that μ=86, we must use the z-test as our statistical test and .05 as our significance level because N>40. Our sample size is 125 (N=125). (Note: One-Sample Statistics and One Sample Test in SPSS output page). 
d) The mean Final Grade for this sample of statistics students is 85.63 ( =85.6252=85.63).
e) The standard deviation for this sample of statistics students is 12.41 (s=12.4109). 
f) The standard error of this sample is 1.11 ( =S/√N = 12.4109/√125=1.11006). 

I need help with:

g) What are the results of the statistical test (use α = .05)? Write them up in APA format.


h) What error did you possibly make (Type I or Type II)? Explain what that would be.


i) Using the mean and standard deviation from SPSS, construct a 99% confidence interval, by hand, for the population mean Final Grade for the sample semester’s data.


j) Using the confidence interval, do we find significance? Even if the results are the same, explain why our results with the confidence interval might differ from those of the t-test (Hint: think about alpha).

 



I could probably do this if I understood how to get the t critical value for this problem and what the t calculated value is, but I'm confused since the sample size is so big. N=125.
