In our final reading discussion, you will read two essays that don’t necessarily fit into the rhetorical modes that we discussed this semester…or perhaps they do? Your task will be to read Gawande’s “Modern Medicine Changed the Way We Die, and Not Always For the Better” and Franzen’s “ ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You’: Cell Phones, Sentimentality, and the Decline of Public Space.” Then, decide what rhetorical mode they operate in. Are there narrative elements? Is something being compared-contrasted? Is there causal analysis at work here? Share with the class in a post of approximately 300 words how you would classify these essays using rhetorical modes that we discussed or others that you are aware of. There is no right or wrong answer here. However, support your claims with specific examples from the text as always. Your initial post should be up by Wednesday at 11:59 PM.
