To use this model, consider the stage of resistance your listeners are in. Then, think about the kind of communication that will be most appropriate for them.

 

So--last week I asked you to think of an organization that you think could benefit from a planned change process.  I heard a couple of good examples, ranging from a new manufacturer who has to deal with great numbers of job applicants who can't pass a mandatory drug test to Radio Shack, emerging from bankruptcy and needing a new retail model.

 

This week, let's undertake our third interim writing assessment.  By Sunday, July 24, at 5 PM, please develop an essay explaining how your choice of organizations should communicate a planned change that is most likely to reduce resistance.

 

Here's an example, which happens to be true:

 

When I was at Sprint, an announcement was made that 3000 jobs would be cut. Right away, people started worrying. And almost immediately, Sprint announced, to this effect, that "here are the jobs that are most likely to be eliminated. If you've worked here less than four years, if you're in these departments, you're likely to be a candidate. If you haven't worked in these areas, you are not a candidate for being terminated." Great example of Factual communication.

 

Then, for the employees likely to be affected, Sprint announced, again in words to this effect, "Here is what the severance package will look like: you get the maximum amount for this period of time. Your resume will be given High Priority for any other openings in the Company. Your relocation will be paid if you accept a job at another location. We'll extend your benefits to the maximum extent possible. Etc." Supportive, right?

 

Although I wasn't a candidate for having my job eliminated, I did hear from more than one person that he or she wished they were being slotted for termination! In other words, Sprint handled the communications for a difficult time of change very, very well.

 

After the layoffs took place, then the company could truthfully go out with a statement something like, "We've had to make a difficult decision but now there's no question that we've got the best people to pull together and accomplish a great task ahead."  Nice.
