§
ü Lean production focuses on the elimination of waste within a production process. The intent is to eliminate unnecessary process steps to make the process as efficient as possible. Steps within the process are assessed for value and any step within the process that does not add value is eliminated.
Lean production adds customer value by eliminating process wastes such as overproduction, excess motion, unnecessary process steps and defective products. Activities that are considered to be value-adding are used to change materials and information into the customer's desired end result. The term waste is used to describe anything that does not add value from the perspective of the customer.
