Create six, roughly 200+word paragraphs, each starting with its own thesis statement addressing the numbered prompts. Do not number your paragraphs, and address the prompts in order. Do not use quotes or sources other than those described.

1) After reading the “Looking Back” section on page 367, how would you describe the Shoshone People in American history? Transform this list of dated events into a prose form narrative. Paraphrase this source – do not copy passages.

2) What is/are Indian Days?  Pp 368-374

3) Why is the study of Native American women in music important? What does it have to do with politics, and the powwow?  See: “Individual Portraits” section on pages 368-369. Also read about gender issues in the body of the chapter!

4) From the “Studying Music” section on page 370, briefly comment (one paragraph) on the social etiquette of the powwow: how does courteousness relate to cultural tradition and music?

5) In reference to the three “Listening Guides” on pages 375, 377, and 379, discuss the “Flag Song” and “War Dance”: how is music functioning for the purpose of the powwow. What are some of the music’s meanings?

6) Research the Standing Rock situation in North Dakota (learn what you can about this via news outlets, blogs, or articles). Read Bronson Koenig’s article (written Thursday, December 1st) and write a paragraph reply DIRECTLY TO HIM – as if you were responding to his words in person, face to face. What would you say to him?

Your reply cannot paraphrase other sources – be original.

Bronson Koenig’s article about his visit to the Standing Rock site.
