Injuries are Not Accidents

"Injuries are not accidents." That is a common expression used in the community health profession, and it is simply true. What this expression means is that injuries typically occur in certain high risk groups, at certain likely times, and in certain likely locations. Injuries are really quite predictable in terms of occurrence, and they trend well from year to year in specific settings. They also trend well from one developed nation to another. Injuries are not pure, random accidents.

Let us take just one example. Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are predictably higher in certain groups within the community than others. The injury rate from an MVA is always higher in males than females, and that is true all over the world. It is higher in teens and 20-year-olds than in persons in their 30s 40s, 50s and 60s. However, the rate rises again in older Americans past age 70. We know approximately how many MVAs will take place each year in each age group within the community. This predictable aspect of MVAs is not unique to the U.S. It is reproduced in every developed nation in which it has been studied. For MVAs, we certainly know where the highest risk levels exist, with young male drivers.
